My next door neighbor's kid (high school) told me he had a 4.1 GPA and I figured "Hey kid, are you from Texas ~ you're workin' me"

Then I notice in my local newspaper they recognize some local athletes and their GPAs are 4.2, 4.3, etc

How can this be? Isn't 4.0 perfect?

Some classes are weighted higher because they accelerated classes.

4.0 is still perfect, you can just get extra for AP (advanced placement - college courses) and Honors classes.

You can actually get a 4.0 with a couple B's that way.  Or even a C, depending.

Exactly. My kid got a B in AP bio last semester, but it was weighted higher because it was an advanced course.

Personally, I think this whole grading system down here is full of shit. Just stick to numerics, it's much more specific on what someone gets vs the whole 80-89= B. Cause that means some dumbfuck who pushed up from a 79 is given the same grade as some kid who's sitting at an 89.

4.0 = A

4.3 = A+

Straight A plusses = 4.33 GPA. That's the new perfect. Then you have the AP and honors credits.

Some places an A in an honors class is actually weighted a 5.0 - so straight 5.0 would be perfect.

Our class valedictorian had like a 4.875 or some ridiculous shit.

Sounds like there's no apples to apples comparison anymore. It's just grade inflation.

Back when I was in high school the highest GPA possible was a 5.0 because you could take 5 AP classes.  It was cool for me since I didn't care anymore and could get all B's and C's and still get above a 3.0 GPA to look good for college. :D

They inflate the scores so that they look good when the state comes in to examine what they are. "Ooo, we have high grades."
