Article makes a good point in that it seems like a windfall for the widows. Seems like the military should almost make financial counseling mandatory or else hold the sum in trust and make disbursements.

This, along with the housing crunch and increasing credit card debt, are good reasons why basic economics should be taught in schools instead of having to spend all their time teaching to the stupid No Child Left Behind test.

Shoot of the week.  In the 9th grade, I took a math course called Consumer Math.  As far as I can tell, I learned more from this course than any other.

It is. Whether the kids take anything out of it is another story.

I could not possibly agree more.  High school was a wasteland for me, I didn't learn a damn thing of value from 7th-12th grade.  By senior year of high school there were still kids running around with their parents' checkbooks at the school bookstore who didn't even know how to write one and had to be shown by the cashier.  Real life things that adults use everyday in their lives are not taught in favor of a ridiculous curriculum that no one will ever use once they graduate.  And if school is supposed to prepare you for real life and the goal is to make money, then I can't understand why investing isn't taught, basic stock and bond market info, anything about credit card debt, or mortgages, or even fucking negotiating when trying to buy a used car, or some type of entrepreneurial class about what goes into owning your own business or buying a franchise.  This is how you make money.  No one gets rich by becoming an accountant and staying one for the next 40 years.  You don't get rich from any job and you don't get rich by being book smart, you get rich by investing, building equity, being your own boss, and avoiding retarded decisions.  And it's easy to say that the kids won't listen or understand, but those are the same kids who won't listen or understand something stupid like trigonometry either.  There are a lot of smart and ambitious kids who WILL listen and understand and it could change their lives.  Our schools are a joke.

Those are the kids that already can/will figure it out on their own. Most of us work for one of them now. :D

It was called Business Math where I went to school, but yeah, same thing.

I took that junior year because I didn't want to take the state Course 3 class (only the first 2 are required). So it consisted of myself, a few others, and all the kids the school deemed were not bright enough to handle Course 3. It was the most meaningful math class I took. Easy too.

Economics is a required course in New York State, but there is no state exam. Therefore, the curriculum varies from school to school. I have taught it in a school that had a business department on its own, so I was not allowed to go into the stock market or anything like that. It was just basic macro and micro. When I took it in a different school, we did all the market stuff.

We had an assembly for the seniors (they take Economics as seniors), where speakers were brought in to discuss credit, loans, and the like. Most of the material handed out was in the garbage fifteen minutes afterward.

Where I went to school, there were no economics classes. Just standard Home-Ec classes like cooking and sewing.  The closest I had was when I took Accounting in college (which was somehow a requirement for my networking degree), and there were an alarming amount of people struggling with what was basically balancing a checkbook as a running tally.

I mean, if classes are offered and kids ignore what's taught....well Darwin's probably going to work his magic on them. Leaving it in the hands of parents is dangerous since so many people these days pawn their kids off on others and don't want to do any actual work like teaching vital life skills. Kids should at least have a shot, since knowing the basics of economics is almost as important as being able to cook your own food.

Let's face it. Women are retards with money. That's why 99% of us who are married, run the finances don't let our wives anywhere near it. I know when Rossi finally takes the plunge, he'll be telling his woman to fuck right off if she tries to influence his investment portfolio.

My brother just went back to the Middle East for the third time.  I always tell him to make sure his life insurance is squared away and to have me listed as the beneficiary (a little gallows humor). I also served years ago and it was 100K back then. I was Airborne Infantry and also got an extra 100 bucks a month "hazardous duty pay" for (being stupid enough) doing that.

They raised it to 200K, then 500K recently. With all the shit going on, they are having a hard time getting enlistment and re-enlistments so they have been boosting up all the "benefits" across the board over the last several years, pay scale as well.

That they might, but I know that even you wouldn't let your wife run the business end of things, and I sure as hell won't let mine anywhere near our retirement, unless I want to end up living in Clovis for my golden years. :D

You might find the mild climate quite pleasing.
