Is there a way they won't try to screw you out of a few bucks?

Want a receiver? Sure, you can buy one for $100-500 from them. BTW, it will also be obsolete in 1-2 years.

Problem with your service? Sure, they'll come look at it.  For $75.

Want HD? That's another $5 a month

Want to watch a PPV in HD? That's an extra $10 on top of the standard gouging.

My remote wouldn't let me order a show so I got stuck on the phone with a machine. $1.50 phone charge.

The service charge sounds a bit odd. They had to come out when the receiver was no longer working. They installed a new receiver and moved it to a new location. No charge.

I always understood that if it was their problem, they'd fix it for free.

HTF and Ports have the same experience I have had with them.  While DirecTV's service dept. sucks MAJOR ass, they will take care of Premier (Ie-those who've gotten raped for years like me) customers and have always sent techies out for free, sent me 2 DVR's for free, gave me "Superfan" for free (after I bitched them out) this seasona and I expect it ongoing at their expense.
Of course, for the "luxury" of spending $100 per month for cable to basically have the right to pay $199 to watch the NFL, you can be a prick of a customer back to them.

I'll state that if I lived in NJ and got to watch the Giants on the regular TV, I would not be a DirecTV customer.

I never had cable or a dish. I just can't justify the cost. 100 a month is way to much since I watch maybe 5 hours a week.

Is Cable/Dish all that?

Smart folks get a combo packet of Internet/Cable/Phone from Comcast, etc... for $100 total per month.  Comcast is one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with and they originally pushed me towards the satellite.

I'm a football idiot.  Plain and simple, but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than moving back to NJ and dealing with my family day to day so I'll gladly pay it.

I've been a DTV subscriber since 1996, never had a problem with them. First off, I've never had to EVER call them for a service call, because a blind monkey with half a brain can fix most all problems with the dish, it's not that hard...and only once did I have a box go out, and they actually sent me a replacement receiver for free...I have 3 different types of receivers here in my house, their HD DVR, the old Tivo DTV box, and the standard DTV SD box, never have any problem with any of them. I'm paying around $100 a month, that's for everything but the movie channels, that includes the DVR service for 2 boxes, the HD package, 3 boxes, and the Nascar Hotpass service..and that $100 a month includes about $7 in taxes...meanwhile, my friend who lives about an hour away has Charter cable, has the BASIC service, maybe 70 channels, NO digital box, and pays almost $75...it's insane...give me my DTV any day..

Right now I have Time Warner

We've bundled the TV, Internet and Digital Phone

It runs @ 145 for all three

That includes the Digital tier and all the HBO/Showtime Channels plus On Demand. Toss in the boatload of Encore movie channels it's about 20 or so in total. Then add in all the other On Demand features not available on dish/direct tv. For some reason Time Warner has also not figured out why I have gotten the MLB package for free for the last 3 years, but the less they know the better. We also have DVR's set up for the receivers

We get a 50/month credit for the Internet from my wife's employer since she has to do some remote logins for clients at times. Plus with the long distance to Canada embedded into the base cost for the phone, I don't get stuck with those charges if I had split up the servive away from the bundle.

All in all for $100 a month net cost, it's a pretty good deal and I don't have to sign a contract.
