Typical political correctness.  Everyone has to be equal, even those clearly genetically inferior.  It's sick.  Conservatives aren't the only ones who are anti-science and anti-progress.

I don't think it's political correctness (which is a very tired concept that needed to die about 15 years ago), it's more the idea that the parents and caregivers of people with mental disabilities literally shape their lives around it. The idea of a cure after spending one's whole adult life taking care of it can shake that person to the core.

It sounds crazy and selfish, and it kind of is, but I've seen it firsthand since one of my closest friends growing up not only had an older brother with Down's Syndrome but also volunteered with the main group in our community dealing with it. She spent untold hours volunteering from the time she was 14 and it was a very large part of her life for a long time. I can see the idea of that suddenly going away being a shocking concept.

This article makes me sick to my stomach.

"If Down syndrome were completely cured, the world would lose something from the absence of that culture," said Skotko, who has a sister with the condition. "There is something positive that people with Down syndrome contribute to the world."

“So much of Down syndrome does impact the personality and character of the person,” said Long, 54. “In Connor’s example, we’ve known him for 19 years. We don’t want a wholesale change.”

This is probably the most dangerous part of the whole article:

"But ethicists fear that genetic manipulation could spell the end of the disorder – and of people who have it."

WTF are they "fearing"? They should be fucking doing backflips in celebration! These cunts are so selfish, they would rather let people grow up retarded so that they can feel good about helping them, then let these sufferers have normal lives. That's straight up fucking evil. Weasels of the week award, IMO.

It is political correctness because if you say it should be cured, it means that there's something "wrong" with people who have it.  And we've spent so much time pounding into people's heads this idea of "handi-capable" or whatever bullshit word we use to descibe these people that we can't admit that there's something wrong with them.  I've seen tons of interviews with parents who have said all sorts of crazy things, about how they're glad their kid wound up with a life-threatening illness because it makes them "special" and taught them valuable lessons about life and blah blah blah.  It's victim syndrome.  Parents can't admit when their children are a burden, so they go over-the-top in the other direction and know that no one will call them on it.  Of course the parent isn't thinking about the child at all, only themselves and their own worth, which ties back to your point as well as Qaenos'.  It's still disgusting.  People need to have the guts to look these parents in the eye and tell them what fucking selfish douchebags they are instead of giving them a pass.  These are just like the MADD cunts.  No one is willing to tell someone whose child was killed by a drunk driver that they're fucking over-the-top crazy.  And that's PC.
