In the mid 80's was it still Bravo , Gino Brito, Tony Mule and Frank Valois as the promoters? If so, who was the promoter for the Coliseo in Quebec? |

May 27th, 1985 (Montreal Forum) Abdullah the Butcher vs. King Tonga (DQ, but I don’t know who…) (10 :35) If this is the match I'm thinking of it then I was at that card and it was a heel vs heel match with Eddie Creatchman managing Abdullah and Tarzan Tyler managing King Tonga. They were running angle that had both Managers trying to be the # 1 Manager in the area. What had happened was that Creatchman took some time off to be with his sick wife and asked Tyler to take over his stable which included Abdullah, King Tonga, Richard Charland and a few others. After Creathman returned some of his former wrestlers came back to him but Charland and Tonga stayed with Tyler which was the start of the angle. Anyway - Abdullah was eventually DQ'd when Butch Reed ran into the ring and attacked King Tonga. I think I was one of the few people there that night that actually knew who Reed was. A few weeks later Charland turned on his partner and Tyler put up a bounty of King Tonga. And that's when King Tonga became a face in Montreal. Here's a bunch from old newsletters on Jason Campbell's site. I'll have to review his site and double-check which ones I found these results. Some may have originated from Tom Burke's GWNS. I'd appreciate any help in identifying the venues for the Hull and Ottawa cards. The 1979 result is from the short-lived promotion that Jack Britton (Gino Brito's father) ran after the fall of Grand Prix and All-Star, but before the founding of Varoussac. I just ran across a note in the November 12, 1984 Wrestling Observer about a 10/13/84 card in Springfield, MA being cancelled over all the heels being detained at the border. I also found a notice in the 09/30/84 WO for a 09/08/84 Springfield, MA card with Rick Martel retaining his AWA World Heavyweight Title against Sailor White and Dino Bravo retaining his International Heavyweight Title against Rick Valentine, drawing 200. The International office also had dates in Maine reserved for late September and early October '84. I'll try to dig up more info. |

I found 2 more IW Montreal cards in Shedlock's Wrestling '85 Vol. 10 Iss. 09. I'd take these results with a grain of salt for a number of reasons. The 01/21/85 card lists Edouard Carpentier, who had already left IW for the WWF along with Guy Hauray to do the French commentary for WWF's Quebec TV. Rick Valentine (Kerry Brown) abruptly left the promotion after the 12/23/84 Montreal Forum card, which led to the International Tag Team Titles being vacated and put in a tournament. The 04/22/85 card falls on the same date as a Paul-Sauve Centre show previously posted here by carlton st, so the card may have happened, but on a different date. IW @ Montreal, QC(No venue listed, but probably Paul-Sauve Centre, since IW ran the PSC on Mondays) January 21, 1985 Raymond & Jacques Rougeau D International Tag Team Champions Rick Valentine & Sailor White to win the titles International Heavyweight Champion King Tonga D Jos LeDuc Dino Bravo D John White Edouard Carpentier D Richard Charland The Hangman & Black Diamond D Reggie Rapone & Robert Rancourt IW @ Montreal, QC April 22, 1985 AWA World Heavyweight Champion Rick Martel D Sailor White International Heavyweight Champion Dino Bravo D King Tonga Jos LeDuc D The Gladiator AWA World Tag Team Champions The Road Warriors D Gino Brito Sr. & Jr. Jacques Rougeau D The Masked Superstar The Tonga Kid D Richard Charland |

I'll have a more detailed answer later, Spatulapup, but for now, I know that Varoussac/International ran shows just about every day of the week in its prime. Interestingly enough, the promotion did not have television until the end of 1980, and had to use the WWF TV coming out of ABC affiliate 22 in Burlington, VT to promote the local shows. |

The French language newspaper that is still available for free on the old Google newspaper archive covered wrestling far later than the English language newspaper at newspapers.com. You might have to brush up on your French a little, but if you only want winners and losers, you can figure it all out with some help from Google translate. Might take a wee bit longer than usual, but I'm pretty sure all the results from the 60s are in there. |

I just hit a goldmine for Montreal wrestling results and clippings! The BAnQ numerique (available here: Digital BAnQ numerique) allows searches across several Quebec newspapers, and not just for Montreal. There's digitized archives of newspapers for Trois-Rivieres, Granby, Chicoutimi, Quebec City, Jonquiere, Sherbrooke, and other cities and towns in La Belle Province. I'll be posting tons of clippings starting now. There's stuff for Lutte Internationale, Grand Prix, Les Aux de Lutte, and other promotions. Let's start with what I've found for Sherbrooke.
