One of those guys that everybody knows or has seen.

Started out (documented here on this site in the Zbszyko Record Book thread) in the early 70s as "Bruno's protege" and sometimes using his real name (Larry Whistler)

Early accolades included "Rookie Of The Year" and a late 1970s WWWFtag team run with Tony Garea where the beat The Lumberjacks for the belts and then lost them to the Valiant Brothers.

His career took a jump up when he turned on Bruno. The TV match itself, the interviews setting it all up and the steel cage match vs Bruno at Shea Stadium remains as one of those times where solid booking and all participants playing their part perfectly became success at the gate.

Had moderate success in the NWA winning the Georgia National title. His post-Bruno claim to fame came when he was crowned the AWA's World Champion by beating Tom Zenk in the finale of a battle royal. Larry would lose the belt to Mr Saito and then regain it before being the last to wear the thing.

Ended up in WCW and winning the "Western States Heritage Title" and enjoying a WCW World Tag team reign with Arn Anderson. A member of the "Dangerous Alliance" and was cast as the weak link of the group.

All in all seventeen or so "glorious years" at the top.

Is he a Hall Of Famer in your eyes?

Absolutely.  One of the best heels of his era.  Zbyszko is one of those guys that could work with anyone.

One of the things I wish we'd gotten to see was a Heenan-managed Larry in a feud with Hogan in the 80's.

A WWWFE Hall of Famer. Yeah just for the Bruno feud. An AWA Hall of Famer. No. A WCW Hall of Famer. No.  A Georgia Hall of Famer. No. An all encompassing Hall of Famer. No.

Larry was the King of the stallers. The first time I saw him live he did the the stalling routine for the majority of his match with Curt Hennig. That made me never want to see him live again. X Pac heat so to speak.

I liked him much better in WCW during 1991 and 1992 as a member of the Dangerous Alliance. I thought that run was better than anything he did in the AWA.

He made the impossible seem possible and the preposterous seem posterous.

He was the (other) man of the hour, the man with the power, the hit-maker, and the record breaker. He made your back crack and your liver quiver. When all the wrestlers were in the back, laughing and jokin’, the Living Legend was out front, :cool:WHOO:cool:, cookin’ and smokin’.

However, I'm gonna have to say no.  I always thought he was boring.

So much better as a heel.  The only reason I watched him in the WWWF was because of the connection to Bruno.

My last "yee-haw" memory of him was his short program with Regal over the WCW TV Title.  It was well played out and had so much build, that people forget that the actual in-ring feud lasted maybe-what?  3 Weeks?

The stalling got on my nerves-at the time.  In retrospect, I am impressed with the way that he almost effortlessly could control a crowd, pick a victim to harass, etc.  I wonder who taught him how to do that?

I wasn't a big Larry "the wrestler" fan, but I am a huge fan of Larry "the talker". His promos as AWA Champion were really great.

I didn't see the Bruno program back when it happened but it holds up in my eyes on video today.

I didn't really really see much of his AWA or Georgia run's but I did see his NWA & WCW stuff & I loved it. I thought his team w/ Anderson was absolutely great & he had some really gems during the Dangerous Alliance run. His brief return in 94 to battle Regal was excellent & is one of my favorite programs of all time.

I also really enjoyed him as an announcer on the syndicated shows. (WWW or maybe Pro I can't remember)

I didn't see the Bruno stuff until years later.  I first saw him in I believe the AWA.  He did absolutely nothing for me.

And really, never did.  The closest I even came to caring about him was his small run with the WCW TV title feud against Steven Regal in '94.  After that, nada.  Couldn't stand him as a color guy.

I have seen the Bruno stuff, and I'm sure it's a case of "not in the moment", but I find it completely overrated, now.

You are absolutely right about that. the Bruno vs Larry matches are "C" matches. The promos and storyline and TV match leading up to the feud A+++++

Well, I was including the promos and angles too.

As I said, I'm sure it's all about viewing it when it happened, but it really didn't do much for me at all.

The only time I cared for Larry was when he teamed with Arn Anderson as the enforcers. I thought they were a great old school team.

Great Promo...but when he was in the ring it was bathroom break time.

Larry's best matches in my eyes were against Lord Steven Regal.  He really showed me something.

In ring, what is important is that you go in as a fan CARING who wins or loses.  Fuck high spots and workrates (whatever they are - LOL).  Take a look at the injuries in the last several years over in and out of ring stupidity.

Larry was a decent/good hand in the ring and a monster interview.  He could get a crowd going and is absolutely a hall of famer.

Met him a few years ago and his persona from back in 1980 made me ready to be disappointed in how he would be towards a fan.  He was so far removed from the interviews and cool - and that says it all.  He played his part extremely well.
