WWE began sending out media invites this evening to a "special event" on Wednesday 1/8 at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. That week is also the 2014 International CES, an international consumer and electronics trade show that WWE has regularly had a presence at. Last year, the company showcased their App, which has just debuted a few months prior to CES 2013.

The media invite announced that Vince McMahon would be in attendance. McMahon rarely attends such events, usually leading WWE to be represented by George Barrios or Stephanie McMahon. So, obviously something is planned.

Could this be the official announcement of the launch of the WWE Network? Stay tuned.

It would make sense, because WWE isn't likely to cut a revenue stream in Classics on Demand - something that costs almost nothing to maintain and is almost 100% profit - without having a Plan B.

Hopefully this will be the launch of the WWE Network and hopefully it will be an upgrade to WWE Classics on Demand in terms of the quantity of oldschool footage.

There was something in the Observer about it being availble through Netflix, somehow.

It's going to be the stuff from Classics on Demand plus stuff they are producing like Legends House.

This would suck from the perspective of trying to record stuff, but might make it available here in Canada (maybe). I'm not confident Canada will see this anytime soon. :(

Bad news for Canada.  I still don't understand how a network can be more profitable than a subscription service?

Who will be buying advertising time on a niche wrestling network?

And really available on Netflix?  That is bush league...

If by "bush league" you mean "the wave of the future", you're correct. Services like NetFlix are redefining how people watch TV. If its good enough for Kevin Spacey, I think it's just fine for Fandango.

I guess personally I have a hard time embracing new platforms like this.  I've "heard" the US Netflix is "so much better" than the Canadian one.  I guess I have to believe that because when I had Netflix about a year ago it didn't seem that great.  The selection was poor and the movie titles were not overly fresh/new or interesting.

So while I think you're correct saying thing like Netflix will be the next evolution of television and home viewing I think it will be some time until it's on par with what we've come accustomed to in television.

I have no idea. I assumed you couldn't.

I gotta agree with srossi. I am hoping that the WWE Network goes with some sort of online model - whether via Netflix or via a standalone network (like MLB). If it went with a traditional cable provider, the cable provider would probably bundle it with some "premium sports package tier" that the consumer would be forced to buy just to get access to the WWE Network. By going with an online model, the consumer is much more likely to be able to order it "a la carte" - thus making it more likely to be affordable

Good point on the network being accessible and cheaper as stand alone.

I think part of my "bush league" comment refers to assuming WWE being unsuccessful in having an actual network and then going online rather than "over the air."

splitting hairs I realize.
