The thread about the Road Dog retiring to be on the TNA commentary team reminded me about a thread I was always meaning to start about guys who were great promos becoming announcers.

With Mick Foley recently starting on the Smackdown! team, it seems like he's been running circles around almost every other announcer in WWE. His teaming with JR really reminds me of the Gorilla and Jesse team where you have two guys who are obviously friends off screen.  The way they play off each other helps them get the action over, and I really think it's helped make SD the far better show as of late.

With Road Dog going to the booth, what are the odds he'll follow that path rather than say, Roddy Piper, who was absolutely terrible in his stint as a WWF announcer (admittedly that probably had a lot to do with the large amounts of coke he was on).

There were so many good promo guys who were hideous in the broadcast booth.  Ernie Ladd immediately comes to mind, Piper and Savage together were fun in the sense that they were both loose cannons who Vince had to try to control, DiBiase wasn't very good, Bockwinkel was average at best and I expected him to be a million times better.  Most don't do very well.  But recent history shows that Foley, JBL, and Tazz are great and Tazz wasn't even known as that good a promo guy.

Yeah, JBL is the best "modern" example. I saw a little Smackdown this week and thought Foley was pretty solid, too.

piper wasn't too bad when he was the color guy for gordon solie in georgia. he had a more serious vibe back in 82-83 then during his time with vince.

freebirdsforver's name reminded me that Michael Hayes was pretty good announcing the UWF with JR.  His WWF stuff, not so much, but he was supposed to be the typical clueless backstage interview guy so that probably shouldn't count.

Pat Patterson's time on the mic was pretty awful too. I didn't even know he was calling the famous Hogan-Sheik match with Gorilla until the whole show was on WWE 24/7 last month. He didn't say hardly anything the whole match.

Hayes never achieved anywhere near that level again.  Even long after the Dok Hendrix days, he was an announcer as himself on one of the C-level shows and was pretty bad.  I just remember him being off the week Gordy died and then coming back the following week to talk about him and the funeral.

Superstar Billy Graham was awful. Remember SummerSlam 88?

Lord Alfred Hayes was bad at color too. He was good at the TNT thing or hosting a coliseum video or something like that...but awlful as a color guy.

As far as sucking, I thought Gene Okerlund sucked at calling matches, but like LAH was good at hosting videos and silly backstage stuff.

BIG difference between cutting a 2 minute promo and doing color for forty minutes.  A lot of those guys just couldn't sustain over a long period of time.
