I'm both surprised and unsurprised. On one hand, the ratings have never been good and after starting off as a relatively conventional NBC style ensemble comedy, it detoured into left field and got progressively further out until it was inaccessible to new viewers and even offputting to longer term ones. On the other hand, it made it this far, has a core audience in an attractive demographic, and much was made of creator Dan Harmon's return to the show this past season. I thought it would get a shortened final season, maybe 12 or 13 episodes, to conclude the series. The only shows I'm annoyed about getting the axe are "Revolution" and "Community". Even though they're both flawed, it would have been fun to keep them around.

Hostages could've been pretty damn good on a premium channel, but even then it probably had a 1 season shelf life. On CBS though, with the hideous Toni Collette in the lead, it was ridiculous, despite the very strong acting of Dylan McDermott. By the end of the first season, I was just disgusted at what they had turned a decent concept into, and the fact that they weren't really hostages at all after about episode 3. I thought The Crazy Ones was good, but with Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar on the payroll, probably wasn't pulling in high enough ratings to justify the cost. I am also the only person not on the show who liked Friends With Better Lives. The Dawson deserved a better fate here.

I saw the first 2 episodes of "Crazy Ones" and thought it was the most obnoxious show I had seen in years. Lots of sitcoms are bad, but this one actually made me angry. Robin Williams should never work again. I saw one episode of "FWBL" and that was it for me. Nothing original or funny about it. Dawson's last show, "The Bitch in Apt. B" (or something like that) was much better (not to say it was good either, but it was better). Dawson's career has nose-dived worse than anyone else's from his show. He must break his DVD player every time he sees Michelle Williams in another award-winning movie. Maybe he should revive his career by sleeping with Tom Cruise. I thought Don't Trust The Bitch in Apartment 23 was a fun show and Van Der Beek did a great job playing an extremely vain and egotistical version of himself as a supporting character. That show had poor ratings and then suffered from ABC airing episodes out of order which made some of the serialized elements of the program incomprehensible. He earned a lot of future work from that series, including this new and now canceled show. Going back to Community, I don't think NBC screwed it except for possibly in one way. If a show is on the edge and may not get renewed, most networks will let the producers know as a courtesy so they can shoot a possible finale. For instance, Raising Hope got word early from Fox that this was it, so it concluded its season with an effective series wrap up. I'm not getting the impression the producers of Community knew this could be the end and thus they didn't conclude the series. If that was a conscious decision to leave the door open for Netflix or Comedy Central, that's one thing. However, if they flew blindly, NBC owed them a phone call.

"How I Met Your Father" has not been picked up by CBS after the makers thought it was a slam dunk. Apparently the pilot sucked and they were asked to re-shoot it, but was told there was no guarantee it would be picked up after the re-shoot either. So they decided it wasn't worth the money to film it again and they walked away from CBS and will now shop the sucky pilot that's already in the can to other networks. If anyone in TV has a brain, this will never see the light of day. But no one in TV has a brain, so...
