This is definitely different. I am noticing it this year maybe it started last year but the players finish the plays and then seek out the refs. In the past nobody cared. What changed -- did I miss something? I'll bet there's a silent fine for not doing it. No way everybody got on board on their own.

It is the No Fun League after all.  Anything else is likely considered celebrating or delay of game.

The refs are the only ones allowed to delay the game by calling penalties on every play.

When I played high school football, in Canada mind you, and in small town nowhereville, Ontario, our coaches demanded we hand the ball back to the officials.  This was done due to courtesy, and I assume, trying to get on the referee's good side to gain an advantage on a judgement call.

So while my football experience, while great, and a lot of fun, full of great memories, was no where near was the US football experience must be like in high school, all that I can surmise is that is courtesy, and borders on ass-kissing.

I am not sure if it was college or NFL but I heard recently that it has something to do with the play clock. The play clock starts as soon as the whistle blows from the previous play and not when the ball is spotted. So in theory, by handing the ball to the ref, it gives you more time on the play clock because he does not have to chase after the ball to spot it.

Yeah, it speeds up the game and plays. I'm all for it... No sense in a ref chasing down a ball just for the hell of it. If you got it, hand it over, and get the next play going!

It came out of the no huddle offense. If you hand it to the ref he will spot it quickly, and you can snap it quickly, so the defense cant sub.

The Dungy/Manning Colts used to practice seeking out the official who spots the ball (the referee I think)to increase the quickness.

Roger Goodell had a sign put up in every locker room that says "The Refs Are Not Your Mother!  Pick Up After Yourselves!"  On player per team has been designated to learn to read and explain it to his teammates.

Thankfully Mcnabb is out of the league now. If he'd been the Eagles designated player he would have had the players tossing the ball to guy on the chains.

Based on the way the games are being called I think it stems from the fact the officiating crews are obviously myopic and wouldn't be able to find the ball if it wasn't handed directly to them.
