The Powers of Pain were repackaged as the Super Assassins in WCW.

Before that, Hercules was brought in as Super Invader.

So you're saying you had no clue who Mr. America was? :D

In Smoky Mtn, Tim Horner donned a mask and kendo gear to become Kendo the Samurai.

Also, just remembered "Outlaw" Don Bass worked as one of the masked Assassins in Memphis in the early 1980s.

Bobby Blaze and Brian Kees also played that role, although they don't really count as established stars.

yes, didn't really meet original criteria of no "Midnight Rider" type of gimmicks.

Wayne Bloom and Mike Enos..while they were AWA Tag Champs being lent out to the NWA as the Minnesota Wrecking Crew II

Reggie Parks who morphed into the Avenger.

Parks Tag Partner, Doug "Gashouse" Gilbert in the Masked Professional

Tim Woods into Mr Wrestling

Chris Benoit into the Pegasus Kid

Scott Irwin, who'd already worked as WWWF Tag Champ as Lumberjack Eric, and as Thor the Viking in Florida became Super Destroyer. Bill could be there as well..maybe not a "star" at that point though before he became Super D #2

Hector Guerrero became Lazer Tron.

Koji Kanemoto becoming Tiger Mask #3

Jerry Stubbs as Mr Olympia

Jesse Barr first as the "fake" Mr Wrestling in Georgia, then later on Jimmy Jack Funk by the WWF...after he'd just held the FLorida and Southern Belts.

Tony Charles as Checkmate in World Class in the early 80's

Tony Marino...first as Battman, then that aborted Devil Blue gimmick in 1984 Georgia after the change to Championship Wrestling from Georgia.

Eddie Guerrero as the 2nd "Black Tiger" in NJPW after Marc Rocco. Then you had Silver King and Rocky Romero also take on that role after already being established wrestlers.

John Studd, aside from the aforementioned Executioner gimmick, also worked as Captain America in World Class, and Masked Superstar #2 in Mid Atlantic.

Roddy Piper as the Masked Canadian in Los Angeles.

Billy Red Lyons and Dewey Robertson as the Masked Crusaders back in the mid 70's

-Bill and Scott Irwin as the Super Destroyers in World Class. Bill had been around in Texas awhile, without a mask. Yet Scott was brought in as a Super Destroyer and only became "Scott Irwin" upon the SD's unmasking. Scott had worked under a few different names (Lumberjack Eric, Thor the Viking), elsewhere, before the SD's were in World Class.

-Howabout Arachnaman and then Fantasia/Badstreet? The well-known Brad Armstrong being repackaged under a mask, twice.

-Would you count Big Van Vader, who had done some AWA work as "Bull Power" Leon White?

-One that I'm not sure about: Rocco Rock as "The Cheetah Kid" in WCW, circa 1997. Was it Rocco simultaneously playing two different characters, or did they use somebody else for "Cheetah Kid"?

-Oh, Hector Guerrero as the Gobbledegooker.

-Konnan and Paul Diamond as "Max Moon". Paul Diamond as the masked Orient Express "Kato".

-Undertaker wasn't too well known as "Texas Red" before he became the masked Punisher.

-Smash was mentioned, changing into Repo Man. Yet when he first came into the WWF, he dropped the somewhat well-known "Krusher Kruschev" act and was repackaged as Smash. Face paint isn't exactly a "mask", but it's a technicality.

Red Bastien wrestled in the final stages of his career in the late 1970s under as mask as Texas Red in Texas and California. There may have been some offhand acknowledgement it was him, but I'm not sure. I've always assumed he put on the mask because he was still a very good worker, but had aged to the point that some fans may have considered him too old and not to be taken seriously as a threat in the ring.

Rocco began his career on the indy circuit as Cheetah Kid before making it in ECW.  I have no recollection of him returning to that gimmick in WCW, but it could've happened.
