Probably the most talked about night of the indy year happened this past weekend in Vorhees, NJ when Atsushi Onita, at 59, wrestled for CZW.  Beyond a bizarre ECW cameo in 1998 (that no one ever understood the point of), the hardcore legend hadn't appeared in a wrestling ring in America since 1992.

Onita was scheduled to take on Matt Tremont in a signature FMW match, a no-rope barbed wire exploding baseball bat match.  CZW charged premium prices and fans actually flew in from all over the country.  It was also an iPPV.  They drew 1,000 fans, double one of GFW's shows and on par with the other.  Suppoedly there was zero chance of CZW making a profit on this show due to Onita's pay and travel, but it had the feel of being the biggest show in CZW in many years and got them tons of press.

And then, Onita basically screwed them over.  Locked into his appearance after advertising this show to the moon and buying the plane tickets, Onita decided he could not work a singles match and demanded it be changed to a 6-man.  CZW had to go along with this, but never notified the fans.

Instead, the match started, FMW stars Hideki Hosaka and Raijin Yaguchi immediately ran in, and CZW stars Danny Havoc and Ricky Shane Page made the save.  The match was ruled a no-contest and re-started as a 6-man, and all attendees said the air just came out of the room and everyone felt screwed.

To make matters worse, anyone expecting real explosions was being stupid as there was no way that would be allowed in a small NJ indy venue, as opposed to the open air stadiums in Japan where FMW ran these types of matches back in the day.  So the "explosions" were lame and disappointing.

After Onita's team got the win, Onita trashed CZW, called the company "cheap", and set up the rematch (the real match actually) by inviting Tremont to come to Japan to have the one-on-one match.  Neither Onita or Tremont was involved in the finish of this one because Onita was protecting it for his own show.

CZW owner DJ Hyde tried to put on a brave face and said he got what he expected from Onita, but the whole thing was huge farce.  Carnies gonna carny.  Hyde got worked.

Onita's ECW cameo in 1998 was supposed to lead to him having an explosion match with The Sandman. The latter defected to WCW and then various other issues popped up, resulting in the planned match never being announced much less taking place. Onita and Sabu, the latter of whom was on the outs with ECW by then, had a press conference to announce an explosion match in XPW a year or two later, but it never occurred.

All I remember about that XPW press conference:

" 'splosion matches.....my idea...." - Atsushi Onita.  And then he baiscally said that over and over and over.

Has anyone in America ever been seriously injured in one of these death matches?

There's been a handful of really bad ones in CZW over the years.  Nick Gage had a light tube go straight through his armpit clean out the other side and severed an artery.  It's a miracle he didn't bleed to death.  There were a few others.

The death match guys in CZW have to be the dumbest of the dumb.  They're risking death for no money in front of a few hundred people, and there's zero chance that doing this will ever get them a spot in any of the companies that pay anything at all (WWE, NJPW, ROH) because those companies haven't hired anyone with a death match background in years.  It's a passe late '90s-early '00s style.  Dean Ambrose is the last guy with remotely that type of history to get signed, and even that was 6 years ago now.  Before him, Necro Butcher got a cup of coffee in ROH around the time "The Wrestler" came out and maybe made enough to cover half a surgery that he needed.  They're risking their lives literally just for the thrill of it.

I bet it's a scene when some of these guys go to the emergency room after getting hit with a light tube, gusset plate or weed wacker.

What is the story on hyde? I saw part of an interview with him on YouTube and he seems like a decent guy.

As a fan he is very, very nice. Not sure if it would be the same if I were in the business, but there are likely worse guys.

It came to mind that one of the issues behind the Sandman vs. Onita explosion match not taking place, or Onita against someone else in ECW, is that once the ECW Arena owners figured out what such a match entailed, they refused to allow it in their building. From what I can gather, Paul Heyman dropped the idea after that, figuring between problems with Onita, Sandman leaving, ECW Arena not going for it, and all of ECW's other crises that it just wasn't meant to be.
