Hogan beating Andre duh. First big mainstream news story I remember of my life was probably the 1988 presidential election. The 1989 earthquake came to mind quickly as well.

I remember Elvis dying but I was only 6 at the time and it really bothered me because he had the same birthday as my mom only a year older and when he died I thought my mom was going to die the next year. The one that I really remember vividly was the gas shortage in 1979. I couldn't believe the lines for gas, and when we got hit with Sandy a few years ago and the lines came back it really reminded me of when I was a kid...only when Sandy hit, the people were much bigger assholes than they were in 1979. Back then, I don't remember any arguments or fistfights, just people waiting in line. Also back then I don't remember people filling their cars plus at least 20 gallons worth of little red cans, but that was happening during Sandy.

When you think the Chileans were able to get 33 miners back all safe and sound from a harder situation, it says a lot about Italian competence. I think one rescue attempt managed to shove him further down.

Baby Jessica happened in America maybe 5 or 6 years later. I do vaguely recall that for a time, there were lots of kids falling down wells when no kid had every fallen down a well before or since. But Baby Jessica was the really famous one.

The JFK assassination. I was 4 and at my grandparents house in PA for Thanksgiving. I was watching TV when they interrupted for the news. I had no idea what was going on so I asked my grandmother. She wouldn't really tell me the details, only that something had happened then sent me to the bedroom to play!

Beatles on Ed Sullivan is one of my earliest memories. The Apollo disaster where NASA lost 3 astronauts (Grissom White and Chaffe) in a horrible fire during pre-launch preparations is still vivid. As a kid I only knew the names Grissom, White and Chaffe because of the artificial oil islands in Long Beach named after them.
