I could recap his career but I'll go lazy here. AKA : #99 [legit football background] 'The Big Cat' (he was so agile for a guy so big) a ton of territorial singles and tag team championships and a solid interview. World Champion? I think he could have been and been successful. Don't ask me where in history and who I plug him in place of and maybe not a longterm champ, but would a win over Bruno, Dusty, Brisco or Gagne have been that much of a stretch and that much out of place? He SHOULD have had a run with a world title.

If so, then in a Don Eagle capacity. He had some limitations due to the toll of his football career, so he wouldn't have had a long reign-

I don't see Ladd being able to wrestle different opponents and give them all a match that made it look like they could have won the title on another night.

Going to say no for that one obvious reason in the era he wrestled in. Perennial number 1 contender for sure. If I happened it would have been the NWA I think or the AWA if there was absolutely no one else and Gagne wanted to add to his title total by losing it to Ladd for a week.

He didn’t fit the mold of a World champion at the time, and not because he was black. He fit into the WWWF best but that was a babyface territory so he never would’ve gotten a real run with the belt. And he wasn’t really a good enough pure wrestler to be NWA or AWA champ who can make a variety of opponents with different styles look good. Also big guys like that usually weren’t given belts often, they didn’t need them. Ladd doesn’t fall into the same “special attraction” category as Andre or Haystacks, but he was used that way a little bit.

Here's the odd thought I had: I think he would have seemed credible as a man to win the belt, but defending the belt like others say would be the trouble. He couldn't work face well enough to tour the NWA circuit. I could see him as a short term transitional champ like Stasiak or Sheiky but to me those reigns are a waste of time. So I guess I could believe he was good enough to win the belt, but I'm not sure he would have had a successful reign.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. I think he did win the WWC belt at one point.

Great promo but limited in the ring due to football injuries. Also had a bad rep and was difficult to deal with outside the ring. That's a big glass of "Nope"

I see it the same way. A short term, transitional champ in the WWWF. Maybe a run for a couple of months but that is about it.

Good size, charismatic as hell, had a legit athletic background, and early on was pretty agile for a big man. I could see a run in the WWWF and AWA. Not sure the NWA was ready for a black World Champ. I truly feel Ernie does not get his just due as an all time great.
