Like Brisco and Backlund, I selected these two because of their similarities.

Bockwinkle and Race

Both 'heel' champions in their respective 'leagues'

Both well-known in the others territory

Both doing the 'heel champion hanging on by a thread' (or a DQ)

Drawing power? not sure.

Both were good wrestlers.

Both were good on the mic.

I don't know if they are wrestled each other

They wrestled each other in Australia in the mid 60's where Race win and again in Amarillo in 69 where there was no winner.
Teamed a couple times in AWA proper in 84 and then in Japan for a tour..
I think there was supposed to be a champion versus champion match that never came off for some reason.
Tough call here but I'll go off of what I know since I saw so much of Bockwinkel and far less of Race.
I'll pick Bockwinkel since he's in my top ten of favorite wrestlers .

It has nothing to do with quality but I love the “what’s your finish? I’ll move” conversations Harley supposedly had with fellow wrestlers.

Tony has recently said multiple times that according to Bobby Nick actually wasn’t very intelligent, is this sour grapes on Bobby’s part or was Nick not the sharpest knife in the drawer?

I like Bock in the ring better & a shit ton better on the mic. Both are legendary & deserve the accolades they got, but Bock just seemed better to me. Maybe thats from being an AWA guy.

Bockwinkel was better on the mic, better in the ring and never inspired other wrestlers to do a move that no one should ever do: the diving headbutt.

Race was the "tougher" guy but Nicky was a better overall worker

I respect Race but it’s not a contest for me, Bockwinkel was better and one of my top wrestlers whose matches I enjoy watching.

My first impressions of Race and Bock were almost like Backlund, except I didn’t see either until April 1984 when I got cable.  I saw Race first, probably by about six months, on a trip through either World Class or on TBS or both.  Didn’t see Bock until Pro Wrestling USA then more when AWA hit ESPN in 1985.  Honestly they were both past their prime when I saw them first, but in my opinion, Bockwinkle was better at that point in time.  Now, when I look back at all the older tapes, I like Race a lot more than I did then, he could really go in the ring when he wanted to - case in point, the Houston NWA Boesch tapes that came out the last couple years.  But Bock not only could go, but did go in every single match.  There was never a clunker when Bock was in there, he even worked hard in jobber matches, treated them the same as headline matches except a lot shorter and he didn’t even break a sweat.  So for my money it’s 100% Bockwinkie.  In Race’s defense however, there is zero doubt in my mind that Race put probably a million more miles in his car going from territory to territory compared with Bock...so he earned a few “nights off”.
I do love the Race stories I’ve heard and then seen.  Such as Race and Bock teaming in Japan against Brody and Hansen, and the big guys started taking liberties with Bock until Race tagged in and got a little loose with the soup bone right hands.  Also love CM Punk’s story about how he had heard Race was a master at drawing blood hardway and asked Race to do it to him one night when Harley was ringside, until he quickly realized mid match that Harley Race punching his eyebrow as hard as he can six or seven times was not fun.

One of my favorite matches is when Bockwinkel travels to Lawler's territory & is ripping on him because he can't wrestle. He puts him in elementary holds like arm bars and wrist locks and taunts the crowd that these are basic holds and Lawler doesn't know any counters.

I think it got Bock over well as that arrogant heel with great wrestling skill.

Id consider them almost equals. I thought bock was smoother and a better interview, but Harley gave off a tougher vibe.

Funny enough I think that they could have switched careers and not have lost anything. Race would hve been a great constant foil for Verne and NWA champ Bock vs Flair, Rhodes, Rich, Brisco etc. In the 70s and early 80s would have been big draws.

How much did Race work face as NWA Champ? Harley was before my time, and I've only seen him as a heel champ.

He was a face in Kansas City and I think St. Louis since he was from MO and those were essentially his home promotions., but that's probably about it.
