So how did this work?

There was something metal (I assume) in the middle of the boot.  Then I bang the toe of my boot on the mat, and it slides into place.  When I bang the heel it slides back to the middle.

Does anyone have a schematic for this device?  It can't be loose in the boot because that would be very uncomfortable.  It must be a small machine in the soul of the boot.

I think it depends on which guy used it.  Some supposedly "loaded" it to the heel, others to the toe.  Either way, by stomping on the mat, this is supposed to slide a metal object where you want it.  I imagine there was a vaguely defined "hidden compartment" in the boat.

The Grappler was one of the masters of the loaded boat, back in the early '80s.  IIRC correctly, he loaded it to the heel and did more of a stomp than a kick most of the time.  I don't believe he originated the concept though.  Who was the first?

The loaded boat is different that the hooked boot that all the Middle Eastern wrestlers wore, which was just absurd because it was a clear foreign object with no subterfuge, but because it was "part of the ring gear" it was allowed.  Made no sense.

You could probably go on Fiver.com and pay some engineering students to come up with plans for a variety of non-existent wrestling gimmicks. Loaded boots, loaded masks, loaded gloves, etc. Actually sounds like a fun series of comics for XKCD.

If I remember correctly watching the Grappler live in 1984, the "loaded boot" also had a much thicker sole...maybe 2 inches.

Len Denton told me the boot on the right has the build-up inside, so all things were equal and there was no real aspect to it aside from the storytelling.

Interesting because in his autobiography he complains about having to wrestle lopsided for 20+ years.

It's extremely important that you bang your toe 3 times on the mat to load the boot. No more, no less. Otherwise it loses its effectiveness.

Because the bone wasn’t healing correctly; he and Piper visited the doctor on TNT
