7/18/32 Lawrence MA Badly injured in a fatal car accident under the influence killing a police officer "Richard Morrisey, a member of the Lawrence police department, driver of the other car suffered lacerations of the face and possible fractures of the left arm and ribs" (Sounds like the officer was off-duty). "Sonnenberg suffered lacerations of the lip, right leg, left hand and possibly a fractured rib" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 30, 1932. Gus Sonnenberg was arrested today on a warrant charge of manslaughter. Also charged with DUI and endangered driving. Richard Morrisey, age 42 and married died at the hospital a few days later. Sonnenberg pleaded not guilty to all three charges. He was released on $2000 bail, which was provided by Paul Bowser, Boston wrestling promoter. --------------------------------------------- August 3, 1932 Gus Sonnenberg was convicted today in federal court of DUI and endangered driving. The charge of manslaughter was dismissed. Judge Frederick Chandler fined Sonnenberg $100 on the DUI and sentenced him to three months in the house of correction on the second charge. Sonnenberg appealed and was held on $600 bail. (NOTE-- $700 in 1932 is equivalent to almost $13,000 TODAY!!!!) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 27, 1932 Gus Sonnenberg in a Canadian hospital with blood poisoning (sepsis) as a result of his recent auto accident. He has been confined there for nearly 2 weeks, stemming from his attempt to return to early to the mat. Physicians had advocated his leg be amputated. Gus would not consent to this and his recovery, although slow, indicates that he will not have to lose his leg. Looks like he had 2 matches in mid-August, which caused the infection. He returned to the ring full time on September 16th in Philadelphia. Last edited on Fri Apr 16th, 2021 04:22 pm by paulsosn |
