Is he a hall of famer? He has decent numbers but poor playoff numbers. 65% completion percentage. 421 Tds. 63000 + yards . Never won a Super Bowl. Never even got to one. Last 14 yrs never missed a start.

Dan Marino under another name. Marino is in so Rivers should probably get in.

I would say yes.

I am trying to think of a comparable QB that is not in as a reason to keep him out. I cannot think of one.

I can't go there (Hall Of Fame)

To me, he's someone that accumulated stats over time and then COLLECTIVELY it looks good.

Just no playoff success. I think that matters.

Do you think Marino should be in the HOF?

Marino belongs

I know it's apples and oranges (I'm going to compare a QB to a coach)

Don Coryell belongs in. He literally changed the game. He (like Rivers) has 'zero' playoff success. Such a failure that he's not 'in'.

With Rivers I can't come up with a great game, a defining moment of achievement, a great record, etc. I didn't look either. Maybe why in my head I see 'stats collector'.

And to be honest. I dont think you can use just stats for QBs anymore. Just the difference in eras. To me, Kenny Stabler belongs 'in' but his stats pale in comparison. I dont know how to adjsut for the different eras.

I agree.
If they do stop using stats as the ultimate factor, I would say no.
I have despised the way Fantasy stats started being the gospel of greatness.
Take away the stats, and he had a slightly better than average career.

Terry Bradshaw also doesn't belong if you go by stats.

Obviously Bradshaw is a great, and a 'winner' - how do you account for 'leadership' at that position?

I guess that's it for me with Rivers. I don't think 'winner'. Certainly he's a great talent but I'd argue Jim Plunkett belongs in before him yet if we go by stats I get murdered in that debate.

That was before the HOF enshrinement became a stat-driven achievement.  With Bradshaw you got 4 SBs and SB MVP.

Swann and Stallworth would not be in the HOF if going by stats.

Another Steelers player, Hines Ward, is sitting out there with decent stats, not impressive stats, but I do not know of a more rounded wide receiver. Super Bowl MVP. He could not knock a lineman’s head off with his blocking.

Matt Ryan will be the next Philip Riversesque QB to get into the HOF. Solid but not spectacular. Did have 1 good run to get to the SB, but is 4-6 overall in the playoffs. He'll end up Top 6 in TD's and Passing yards, but never be confused with being one of the elite QB's in his era.

So, then Rivers should get in based solely on the numbers?
I think that is the debate here.  beejmi thinks you need more than raw numbers/stats.
