I have zero recollection of this happening. Wondering if anyone else remembers this.

I remember hearing about it at the time. It was pretty big news for me and my friends back then hahah.
Also, about a month later I bought the issue at a comic shop in Florida while on summer vacation.

This was during my "dark period" of being a comic book nerd. Was freshman year of HS, so baseball, pro wrestling, and the recently released Nintendo were my jam.  Didn't get back into comics again until college.

This went down on June 5, 1987- not sure how I remember this, but my dad took my buddy and me to a WWF show at the Rosemont Horizon that night. It was a Saturday if I recall. Main Event was Hogan vs. HonkyTonk, but HTM did not wear the IC belt (and nobody knew at the time in the crowd), since that match wouldn't air until the following weekend. I think I knew he had beat Steamboat earlier in the week from calling Coach Kurt's hotline (976-6363!).

I thought The Green Goblin killed Mary Jane in the comic books.

I say "traditionally", because Marvel's done so many retcons and reboots in the past 15 years that it may be that the Goblin's killed Mary jane, as well. I mean, they brought Gwen back and she had been dead for decades.

At the time, I remember reading about the Spidey/MJ wedding at Shea Stadium in Marvel's letter columns, "Bullpen Bulletins" and such. Never saw the footage until now. So, thanks.

Without marking out too badly here, the issue that Goblin kills Gwen has to be in my top three issues of all time. Amazing cover, incredible issue.

Gwen Stacy has been brought back in one form or another more often than Stefano DiMera was on Days Of Our Lives.

Almost everyone comes back to life in the comics.... except Ben Parker.

DC has been just as bad lately.  Other than Crisis in the mid 80s, they had generally an even continuity through the late 2000s.  Even Crisis didn't entirely reboot things.  Then somewhere around 2011 you got the New 52, which rebooted everything. Then they scrapped that for Rebirth about five years later.  I think recently they moved into "Dark Metal", and there's another switch coming up.  Flash, GL, Justice League all had stories you could generally follow from the 70s to 2010.  Now, I try to pick up recent books and have no idea how it fits in to the bigger picture.

This was around the time that Marvel was transitioning from the Bronze Age of comics, with traditional comic book art and a product still largely aimed at kids up to junior high, to what some call the Modern Age with much more complex and exaggerated art along with stories that aimed more towards adults. Marvel itself wasn't in great financial shape, something that negatively impacted or even killed several projects. The wedding of Spider-Man and Mary Jane was a gimmick to get some mainstream publicity and sell some comics.

On a different note that a few others have mentioned, I was always a Marvel guy over a DC guy in my time as a comic buyer and reader, a period that largely coincided with the twilight of the Bronze Age and ended when the Modern Age took over. My preference for Marvel concerned its coherent continuity. Although it never got as bad as things got with DC before "Crisis on Infinite Earths", the constant Marvel reboots and multiverses of the past few years, while possibly creating some entertaining stories, have undone a lot of what made Marvel special in my opinions.
