Has anyone ever been to Austin, TX?  I’m flying down there next week with my daughter for a soccer showcase and we will have Thursday afternoon free the day we fly in and some time after her last game on Sunday. I’ve been searching around but haven’t found much that could be fun for both me and a 14 year old. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated!

Black's BBQ is a good places for Texas BBQ.

Watching the bats under the Congress bridge is a pretty cool unique experience.

South Congress Avenue has a bunch of restaurants and shopping. Some unique shopping there

Barton Springs is nice.

6th Street is fun. Lots of bars and live music such. Pretty safe for a 14 year old during the day, but lots of drunks at night. You park under the freeway. If a homeless person comes up to you and says he/she will watch your car, pay them. LOL. Usually 5 bucks should cover it.

Austin is very hipster...and the "traditional" Texans hate it. Have several friends and family who live or have lived there.

It has bad traffic. If you want to check out the downtown area, don't expect to get there quickly and/or find parking. If you're staying in the downtown area, go on foot.

The Bob Bullock Texas State Museum, near UT, might be okay for a 14 year old. Good way to kill about 2 hours.

Like Brodiescomics said, 6th st. is fun during the day for kids. Lot of artsy and touristy shops, plus some good places to eat.

I think it's Guadalupe st, northeast of the UT campus, which has a fairly cool "college main street" vibe. Last time I was there (about 2012), it was over 100 degrees, so I went into EVERY shop. Boutiques, music shops and book stores. Find an odd comic shop in a combo mall/rec center in 2009-- it's probably not there anymore.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. We’ll actually be staying in Rolling Rock which looks to be really close to Austin. Soccer is the focus for the trip, just looking to make a few fun memories in the little spare time we have since she’s never been to Texas before and I’ve only been once.

I'm guessing you got auto-corrected there and meant Round Rock. LOL. Round Rock is a nice area North of Austin. Round Rock Express play at the Dell Diamond there. AAA affiliate of the Texas Rangers (formerly for the Astros).

It might also be the tail-end of "bluebonnet season". It's typically sometime in April. They bloom everywhere and make for nice scenery, even if you're just driving around the countryside.

They're mostly gone already. Down here anyway. I am about 90 miles South of Austin.

My son went to Austin to visit a friend a couple months ago.  He said Black's BBQ was the best he's ever eaten.  He also said that there are homeless people everywhere and they sleep in tents, and it smells like piss everywhere you go.

I want to do Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio one of these years. The trip keeps getting pushed back. We were going to go in February but we're going to Disney World instead. So maybe February 2023. There's no way I'm going during the summer.

Austin was really cool from what we were able to see.  Great food and the downtown area was fun to check out. It rained so hard the first two days we were there so that really cut down on our sightseeing, but we really enjoyed the city. This won’t be the last time my daughter plays there so I’m hoping for some better weather next time so we can explore the city some more.
