You guys have probably heard this story from me before...

My mother passed away when I was around 5. She was diabetic and spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital. She was rarely home due to the hospital stays so I don't remember much about my times with her.

My mother's death is a big reason why I support Obamacare. My father had difficulty maintaining a job when he got back from Vietnam. Not because he was a bad employee, it was because the companies that he worked for all went out of business. Since health insurance was only affordable through an employer plan, my family did not have health insurance when my dad was laid off. Even when we had health insurance, my mother was not covered since her diabetes was a pre-existing condition.

Without insurance, all of my mother's medications (insulin was very expensive at the time) and hospital stays were paid out of pocket and at higher rates than those paid by insurers. I think at the time of my mother's death, my father was in debt to the hospital for about $300,000 dollars (I am not sure of the exact amount). After my mother's death, my father worked out a payment plan with the hospital and paid the bill to them every month for over 10 years. As Dusty Rhodes would say, those were "Hard Times" at our house as we were eating pork & beans out of a can for our one meal of the day.

Fortunately, an anonymous donor made a large donation to the hospital to help out families like ours who were deep in medical debt and the hospital waived the remainder of the payments. If it wouldn't have been for that donor, I suspect that my family would have lost our home and been living in the streets within a few years since every extra penny that my father had was going to pay off that medical debt. My goal in life is to somehow repay that generosity that was given to my family and enabled me to grow up to live a productive life and provide a good life for my wife and child.

My mother has been gone for 20 years. I still miss her.

My first job ever as a kid was working at a Wendy's.

I'd come home from work at 10:00 o'clock at night.

Soon after, a steak, right off the stove (with a bottle of A1) would appear

A little later a baked potato would appear. Smothered in butter.

There was always dessert. Name your favorite pudding.

I had it so good and didn't realize it.

I was fortunate growing up I had a stay at home mom.
I remember seeing a kid at school with his house key around his neck. That's when I realized I was fortunate. Always a home cooked dinner and help with homework.

One month ago today my mom got her first COVID shot. She hadn’t been feeling great before, no fever but a small cough. Doctor said to take some Mucinex. A couple of good days, a couple of bad days, pretty soon a week goes by and she’s not getting better. Dad takes her for a COVID test - she passes. Doc says flu test, dad takes her, she passes. Take the higher dose of Mucinex. I’m leaving for Florida. Dad says he’s going to take her to the Doctor that day. I get to Florida, message on my phone. Doc said take her to the ER because that will be the quickest way to get tests done and get results. Next morning, my first full day in Florida, I’m off to Epcot. Dad calls. Mom has an extremely aggressive small cell lung cancer. So I call mom in the hospital. It’s the last time I hear her real voice - since the next day she lost her voice and when it came back it was high pitched and squeaky. That day she told me she wasn’t doing any treatments, and she said she wanted to see me, she also said goodbye and she loved me - I wouldn’t say goodbye back because I didn’t want her to quit. Dad tells me not to come home, they won’t let me see her anyway. So after a week where it was damn near impossible to have fun, although I did my best because she told me to, I came home. Dad said that the doc wanted her to do one radiation treatment. So she did. It helped a lot, so she told the doc to do what he felt was right and so she got nine more treatments. And she’s home now. The last few days have been rough, eating any food seems to either make her puke or shit so she’s barely eating, living on pédialyte until we can figure out the nausea. Immodium helps the diarrhea. This will kill her, but I’m grateful to have one more Mother’s Day with her. Two weeks ago, we thought she would die in the hospital. It got very close one night. With the improvement we’ve seen, assuming things don’t get worse, we may even have another Christmas with her. When she was getting ready to come home, we were told she’d be lucky to make it to August. We have some hope, she’s not great but also not suffering badly. There is pain, but we all have pain. I’m very lucky today.

Positive vibes your moms way.

This is terrible.  Glad she decided to fight a little bit to get more time.  You never know, the treatments might extend her life more than they think.  As long as the pain doesn't get too bad, there's always a reason to keep trying.  Best wishes.

My mom is an inspiration in that he overcame cancer in her late 30's to becoming a well-known fitness instructor in Taiwan (and still is) into her 70's. She is very strong-willed and sometimes even overbearing, but a lot of that comes from having to overcome so much in her life. But I know she loves me and I have all the love in the world for her.

Superstar-- I clicked on this thread to post a deliberately stupid "mom joke"...but your post really resonated and I'm glad you shared. All the best to you and your family.

My mom..... used to be fun and a little naive in a harmless way. Yet ever since she retired, 13 years ago, she's become isolated, delusional and purposely forgetful. She's desperately been searching for a golden ticket or "get out of jail free" card, so she can loaf around and officially Do Nothing. Goes to countless doctors and swears something's wrong with her.

Her latest belief is that she has trouble breathing. So she went to a specialist who found nothing wrong with her, then told her it's because she's overweight, lazy, and needs cardio exercise. She told the doctor to go to hell and left in a huff.

She loves going to specialists and brags about it. I had some serious ear problems in the late 90's. Two weeks after I went to an ear specialist, she booked an appointment with him because: "sometimes I can't hear things". Yet my problems had to do with a sinus infection, a clogged canal, and nothing with auditory issues. Doctor was happy to take her money and tell her she was fine.

What pisses me off if that there ARE seniors who have difficulties and wish they had a clean bill of health. Yet my mom has that clean bill and wishes she had problems.

On Friday at 7:10 pm, my mom’s hard fought battle ended peacefully while she was asleep. She was 85 and fierce right to the end. Thanks to all of my friends here that reached out with support and positivity.
