You'll hear wrestlers saying they didn't win this belt or whatever because 'they didn't need it'.

So, who genuinely fit into that category.

I have an old-time and a current day example.

Old time: Andre The Giant

Current day: John Cena

To me they are the same attraction with or without a belt. Both, obviously different talents but no belt needed

There is one reason for putting a belt on Andre/Road Warriors - and that's because whoever the champ is is undermined if Andre et al are not in contention for it. From a fabe perspective why wouldn't the biggest and strongest guy around go for the world title?

I wonder though if at some point in a pro wrestlers career you could say 'most" of them didn't really need a "prop" to get over.  Even those who consistently went into a different territory and in short order had a belt put on them. The belt would add heat to a wrestler surely but they would be a known quantity even it was only through magazines, pre interweb days.

Our lists here will be of 2 or 3 dozen guys who through most of their careers won't have had titles (exception being early in their careers) , but there may have been other factors as to why they didn't have a title put on them in most areas they wrestled.

Not really explaining it right but just a random example might illustrate it better.

Ray Stevens.  HOF'er for sure but at the same time different from the wrestlers who are going to end up being listed here. Multiple titles in his career but would have reached a point somewhere where he was recognized and would be a welcome addition to any card but again not someone who immediately comes to mind when  people ask the question posed here. But he really didn't need a belt to get over.
So wouldn't that be the same for any wrestler 10 to 15 years into their careers?

Of course ego has something to do with why some wrestlers who don't/didn't need a belt seemed to always have one.  Hulk Hogan comes to mind.

A very particular example... When Lou Thesz dropped the NWA title to Dick Hutton, Thesz as the former champion was a much bigger draw than Hutton with the belt. The only times that Hutton was successful at the box office as champion was when he was defending against Thesz. So, at his peak, Thesz didn't need the belt to draw. I will kneecap my own argument here by pointing out that Thesz was given the International title so he could continue to be billed as a champion, but that was when Thesz was past his peak. Thesz at his peak, the 1940s and 1950s, drew whether he was champion or not.

I think basically, if your special marketability is not your wrestling skills, then you don't need the the title to draw.

Andre the Giant had his size. Maurice Tillet was a huge draw in the early 40s, due to his freakish appearance, and he certainly didn't need a title. You can add all the other freaks in here, although most never got to main event status: Haystack Calhoun, Happy Humphrey, the Swedish Angel, the Maguire Twins.

The Undertaker. When the Streak became a thing, his WM matches were just as important as world title matches, sometimes even more so. Even the ones that were title matches, I'd say the Streak was the draw, rather than the title. The aura of the Undertaker has also been a big draw over the years, although his matches with Kane and "The Undertaker" were all awful and never lived up to the hype.

Wrestlers who had unique styles would draw based on that, often bringing a level of violence that wasn't suited for title matches: Abdullah the Butcher, Cactus Jack, Bruiser Brody. The Sheik would be in this category, but he was always the US champion or the top contender, and he would take that belt to other territories, so I don't see how he can be added to this list, unless it means that hypothetically he didn't need the belt, but he was synonymous with the US title from 1965 to 1981.

The Rock and Cena? Maybe today, with their celebrity being the draw, but during their full-time years, if they didn't have a title, they were chasing one.

Bruno Sammartino

After he lost the WWWF he would be on the card as part of a 'double main event' no belt on the line, it was 'Bruno Sammartino' that was the hook

Baron Von Raschke did not need a title, and that is all you need to know.

Same with all the travelling attraction like Calhoun, Carnera, Tillet etc. Also, none of them were good enough in the ring to hold titles for any significant amount of time.

Jake Roberts is who I think of first. Also after watching Mid-South, I was thinking Hacksaw Duggan as a face didn't need a belt.
