One of the most legendary figures in professional wrestling history has reportedly departed WWE.

Wrestling Inc. and Fightful reported on Monday that Ric Flair has been released by WWE after requesting to be let go from his contract. His most recent stint with the company lasted nearly nine years after returning to WWE in 2012.

The 72-year-old Flair last appeared on WWE programming when he was featured in a storyline with Lacey Evans and his daughter Charlotte Flair earlier this year. The storyline, which included Flair being aligned with Evans and feuding with Charlotte, came to an end when Evans announced this February that she is pregnant with her and her husband’s second child. When asked about the feud in a May interview with Ariel Helwani, Flair said he didn’t feel comfortable with the storyline.

Charlotte will challenge for the Raw women’s championship at SummerSlam later this month, facing reigning champion Nikki A.S.H. and Rhea Ripley in a triple-threat match.

Flair has been retired from in-ring competition since 2011, when he last wrestled for TNA Wrestling. His final match for WWE was against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 24 in 2008. Prior to being granted his release, Flair had been with WWE in a non-wrestling capacity since his 2012 return. Flair announced in May 2020 that he had signed a new contract with WWE.

Flair, who is recognized as a 16-time world champion by WWE, is a two-time WWE Hall of Famer. He was inducted individually in 2008 and inducted as part of the Four Horsemen in 2012.

WWE publicly made the announcement toady, more curt than usual:

"We have come to terms on the release of Ric Flair as of today, 8/03/2021."

No future endeavors wishes for the 2-time HOFer, probably because they know what those future endeavors will be.

It's be a one-time thrill, but most of us would mark out a bit if Tony Schiavone was conducting an AEW interview with Sting, then suddenly there's a big "Wooooo" over the PA system and out comes Flair.

It'd be a cliche Flair interview ("you and I, the blood, the sweat, the tears", "walkin that aisle", dropping an elbow, etc.), but it'd be fun. Nostalgia gets over-played in wrestling nowdays, but I'd be okay with this.

I wish Okerlund was still around for one last "Mean BY GOD Gene!".  If he was, you know he'd show up in AEW a few times.

I don't blame him for going. He will fit right in. But you know when he is done there he will trash it and kiss wwe's ass again. That's his routine.

It would have to take place "in the shank of the evening", of course.

Comicbook.com:

Randy Orton found himself trending on Monday, but not because of anything he had done on WWE TV (he reportedly isn't backstage for this week's Monday Night Raw despite local advertising claiming otherwise). Instead, "The Viper" was on so many fans' minds because of a bizarre trend that had started forming recently. Beginning with Matt Hardy just before the COVID-19 pandemic began, a string of wrestlers who have been let go by the company all had their final appearance on WWE TV involve them getting attacked (either physically or verbally) by the former WWE Champion.

That included Christian Cage, The Big Show, Mark Henry, Bray Wyatt (released this past weekend) and Ric Flair (who was granted his release on Monday). And as an extra twist, Hardy, Cage, Show and Henry have all wound up in All Elite Wrestling.

You just know that some idiot is now rewatching the past year plus of WWE television to try and work out who will be released next.

That in itself is quite horrifying.

Solely responsible? Jim Crockett would be interested in how he arrived to that conclusion.

I'm pretty sure Flair would be dead right now if it wasn't for WWE. Haven't WWE bailed him out financially a couple of times because Triple H loves him so much?

Just unreal. Clearly someone got in his ear. He sees Tully and Arn having fun in AEW. There’s a suggestion for him to go over there and do something similar. He’s a carny and will never change. He was in Chicago this past weekend signing autographs, but the personal appearances must not be enough to keep him occupied.

Anybody else hearing these goofy rumors about Flair sending a text to Vince complaining about Charlotte's booking, and Vince getting irritated and releasing him due to that?  I think Meltzer is attached to the rumor.
