Was listening to Between the Sheets this week and Zelner read Meltzer’s WON for the week stating Patera was scheduled to beat Tito at the Meadowlands for the IC belt until his legal issues started to balloon, and that’s when they decided to go with Valentine at the London, Ontario show.  Anyone else ever heard this or is it BS? It’s the first time I’ve heard this.  I guess it makes sense on the surface.  The Valentine/Tito feud was awesome and made so much sense with the figure four angle and Tito’s surgery, but thinking back it did seem to all come together on tv very quickly.   Valentine was great as a former US Champ.  Patera had the previous IC run, but that was a different time.  I don’t remember for sure, but I think this would have been just before they started teaming him with Studd and just before Heenan came in.

I think it makes perfect sense, as Vince loved Patera back then. He had the look and wore the Olympic singlet. Valentine was awesome as the IC Champion but Vince couldn't have been certain that he was going to stay - he'd been through the WWF a few times before and would always leave to go back to the Crockett's.

In the wrestling world people like to cling to absolutes as if a run with Patera would have been done in the same time vacuum as Valentine's tenure with the belt.  While it may have been a booking possibility and discussed internally and with Ken, the decision not to go that route doesn't have to be a pass/fail on its overall validity.   The category of Woulda is always up for analysis but you can't measure all the intangibles in retrospect accurately, while you can lump Coulda and Shoulda together for as much speculation from people not tasked with making decisions.

Agreed. I guess I love talking about this kind of minutiae about 40 year old wrestling angles in the same vain as historic baseball trades that fell through (there was a rumor the White Sox were going to trade Carlton Fisk to the Yankees for Don Baylor at one point in 1985). It’s trivial stuff with no relevance.

I guess Patera did okay for himself in the tag role with Studd in any event.  Maybe on the surface the IC title run looks like a better spot because you are seen as a singles success, but Ken worked singles and tags with Andre on top in 1984-85 with the one-off matches with Hogan, too.   Right up until he was sentenced, Ken had a top spot, so Titan wasn't shy about highlighting him.

It is interesting that shortly after Patera had to leave, they ended Valentine's run as a single and put him in the tag team with Beefcake.  Greg using the figure-4 to set up Santana's surgery, return and regaining the belt was a better chapter in the story than anything Ken might have done, in my view.  Those elements wrote themselves start to finish.   There was common ground in that in either case, both Greg and Ken were Lou Albano guys who came out of his face turn with new managers in Jimmy Hart and Bobby Heenan, respectively.

It's really interesting to think about, but if it would have had a negative impact on the Santana/Valentine feud, then I'm glad it didn't happen.  I think Patera should absolutely be in the HOF.

If Patera has that run, I wonder if Valentine ever gets a run with Savage coming in the next year?

Who would have been feeding Dave info at that point?

Was Jim Barnett in the WWF by that time and did Dave know him then?

If so then it was probably him.

I don’t think you have time for a Patera reign into early ‘85, back to Santana, drop it to Valentine summer of ‘85, back to Santana in the fall, and then to Savage.  Feels like too many switches within the span of a year and a half.
More interesting question is if the Dream Team still happens at all or if it kicks off sooner.
