Here is a cool story about the production of the song “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da".

It's one of their worst tracks. Yet it is their 25th most downloaded/streamed track in the UK - and rising (up ten places in a year). Can't understand that at all.

I never thought of a reggae feel to it until I read this article.

Yes it's a terrible song but a guess it's weirdly catchy and is still one of their more famous ones for casual fans, even those who don't like it.

I don't like it enough to read an article on it ☺

There is a nice twist in the lyrics, though, that most people don't hear.

Early in the song - "Molly stays at home and does her pretty face. And in the evening, she's a singer with the band"

Later - "Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face. And in the evening, she's a singer with the band"

In general, McCartney seems to have been in a weird place, lyrically, around the time of the White album. Songs about a serial killer ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer"), shooting a spouse's lover ("Rocky Raccoon"), etc. Dressed up in a way so that they have maximum appeal, but definitely not "Grandma's music"

McCartney was definitely trying - maybe subliminally - to out-Lennon Lennon.  The first Wings single was the staggeringly gauche "Give Ireland Back To The Irish", almost as if he were trying to invent punk because he had always been seen as the nice one.

I'm no McCartney scholar, but he's my favorite artist. I get a kick out of all the characters he created.   John and George rarely wrote in the third person, so I guess someone in the Beatles had too.
