It starts off looking like a work (at least to a wrestling fan) with his weird open hand palm strike to the shoulder, conveniently right on Rock's microphone, but then the potty-mouth tirade after makes me think it was legit. He's clearly nuts, and most of the films he makes are ones that he also produces, but I think he'll be in Mel Gibson territory now, and no one will hire him (although people will take his money to work for him).

The number of people taking his side is frightening, this whole "Don't talk shit about someone's family" machismo bullshit, as if it's not a fucking award show with jokes about people in the public eye. The heat on comedians for saying anything remotely funny about anyone is just so intense I don't even know how the art form can survive. But Smith worked his slap for the most part and Rock barely sold it, more surprised than hurt, so Smith just looks like a pussy. If you're a tough guy who's going to assault someone on live TV for your wife, then fucking punch him like a man. And he was smiling even after the slap it looks like until he got back to his seat well away from Rock and got scary.
