Being a WWWF geek I liked Dick Woerhle.

A lot of respect for the NWA’s Tommy Young.

Both guys had a lot of energy, never out of position, pounded the mat hard like it should be done

The best referee is one that you never notice. The famous ones (to me) like Earl Hebner and Tommy Young were always trying to get themselves over to a certain extent. Hebner with his overacting arguing with heels, and that ridiculous shit rolling around with the women that he did in TNA. Tommy Young always did that spot when he kicked the heel's hand away when he was using the ropes for leverage, sometimes even leading directly to the pin.

One weird thing I notice a lot of referees do is selling the moves as they happen to the wrestlers in the ring. If you just watch them, it's like some weird mime-wrestling. Aubrey Edwards does it all the time, but it's subtle enough that you wouldn't notice it if you don't watch her. Mark Curtis looked like a fool in every match, and Bill Alfonse was also bad for it.

So, a shout out to any referee who I have no strong memories of, because they were doing their job perfectly.

Woerhle is up there. Tim White I thought was good. Tiger Hattori in Japan. I liked Mike Chioda.

I am with Kriss in that I don't like Tommy Young and Earl Hebner becoming part of the match so much, and I don't like wrestlers selling for referees. Young's shoving spots with Flair I thought were awful. A World champion of his caliber should never be shoved to the ground by a referee and just take it, but Flair was very generous in putting over EVERYONE, even Young. Chris Jericho does it now with the female AEW referee Aubrey Edwards because he really wants to get her over. HHH and Shawn Michaels liked Earl Hebner and sold for him, and Hebner is even smaller than Aubrey. I hate all that shit. Referees should be authority figures but wrestlers should never physically be inferior to them. A referee can assert control in other ways.

I agree that the referee shouldn't be the focal point and should be an unnoticed (for the most part) part of the match.
Also agree with the selling, Aubrey is bad but Bryce is the worst I've ever seen for it. It's nearly ruined some great matches for me.

Also agree with Srossi about the refs not physically shoving wrestlers around. Another part of that problem in my opinion is that it is common enough for a wrestler to shove a ref around and not common for it to ever lead to a DQ. Instead the ref will push back. Also, the concept of a heel being afraid of being fined/suspended for striking a ref is lost.

I grew up watching AWA/WWA matches, and the referee I watched for and liked was Connie Marker. I thought he had a cool name, along with a great moustache.

Tim White, Mickie Jay, Scrappy McGowan, Dick Kroll, Larry Lisowski are a few of my favorites.

As a concept I agree the referees should basically disappear. And should never get physically involved.

However, you have to admit that the guys today are too bland.  And refs w personalities were interesting. It added to the schmoz that is professional wrestling.

Dick Woerhle was the guy back in the day.

But, as a member of a group of teenage wrestling fans, we loved Gilberrrrrto Roman. Pure comedy. Billy Caputo had a great name. Bob Stanley looked ancient.

Joey Marella because he was often the subject of disdain for the heel announcer such as Jesse Ventura and Bobby Heenan. Didn't learn until years later that Joey was Gorilla Monsoon's adopted son and that Ventura/Heenan were razzing Joey/Gorilla.

For my old school ref pick, gotta go with Dick Woerhle. He was the first referee that I ever saw to have the guts to DQ a wrestler. He disqualified Angelo "King Kong" Mosca in a TV match against a jobber. This set up the "water pitcher angle" for his feud with Pat Patterson:

I was not a fan of Flair doing the push and shove routine with the ref? And Flair would let the ref make him look weak. Why are you trying to get the ref over?

I don't remember the circumstances, but David Manning was the only ref I ever saw get color. Gotta give him that.

Tommy Young - Someone who is always in command and was the ref in some of my favorite matches (Flair vs. Steamboat, Flair vs. Funk)
