Charles Robinson gets the balance between not becoming the focus of the match, yet being just noticeable enough to show that he is a leading authority figure, perfectly.

You just did not fuck with Dick Woehrle. Easily my favorite. Tommy Young second. Gilberto Roman third just because he pissed off Gorilla so much.

As a Memphis guy, I really enjoyed Paul Morton. He didn't try to get himself over but he exuded a level of respect that the fans appreciated.

My local monthly arena was the Zembo Mosque in Harrisburg, PA. Wee Willy Weber was our referee until his death. We then got Dick Woehrle. Woehrle by far was the best referee in the WWWF

If I go back to my days watching the Lebell promotion my first one would be Johnny Red Shoes Dugan. Dick Woerhle was like a carbon copy of him. Very much in shape middleweight who called the matches completely legit. My favorite MSG referees were Dick Kroll and Danny Bartfield. Again they were no nonsense refs who really made it look like a legit sporting event. WCW I thought all their guys did great jobs. My favorites were Pee Wee, Little Naitch, Nick Patrick and Randy Anderson. WW(F)E I liked Joey Marella and Mike Chioda

Pee Wee is Randy Anderson. He wasn't so nice you had to like him twice. I do like the observation that a former wrestler of middleweight size from an era when they worked on cards around the country works well in an environment where they want the performers to be larger than life. That being said, what about that 500 lb guy from the old black-and-white wrestling clips who would hop up and down when you got him angry and everybody would back down?

Back in the day when there were clear lines between the different weight divisions, it was very common for the light heavyweight circuits to use large referees and the heavyweight circuits to use small referees.

A quick aside, there was a ref that the WWF used at a house show I attended at the Rosemont Horizon in the mid 80's (Hogan vs Orndorff was the headliner) and in one of the prelim matches they trotted out a frail looking old man to ref; the guy had some local notariety as I think he also worked for the AWA, WWA or both. Any idea who this may have been?

If it wasn't Percy, it may have been Mike Figueroa, an older hispanic guy, and he'd always where the striped ref shirt with the Illinois State Athletic Commission patch on the sleeve. He worked all of the AWA shows, but he'd also work the televised WWF and NWA shows. One nuance about his style I never cared for... on pin attempts, instead of slapping the mat three times, he'd tap the mat in between each count. Instead on One, Two, Three, it was like One, tap tap tap, Two, tap tap tap, Three. I think he worked a couple of matches on the Wrestling Classic, and that pin count threw the guys off in the ring.
