I don't know much about cars but I do know that some companies produce diesel consumer vehicles (for example, the VW Jetta Diesel). Given that diesel is nearly $3 more per gallon compared to 87 octane unleaded gas, why would anybody ever buy a consumer diesel vehicle? Does it have any benefits vs a car that runs on unleaded gas?

I'm not sure many do it, but you can run a diesel engine on vegetable oil.

I have a diesel car. Diesel was cheaper than petrol here until recently. And, historically, you got much better miles to the gallon with diesel. I don't think that's the case at all anymore with newer cars.
