Day 1 was pretty amazing, but Day 2 was a weather nightmare. Multiple lightning delays and finally a cancellation of all the headliners. I will go into more detailed thoughts on each band later, but so far I have seen…

Day 1
Bad Wolves
Mammoth WVH
Black Label Society
In This Moment
Five Finger Death Punch
Kiss

Day 2
Baroness
Ministry

Day 3
Nothing More
John 5

Day 4
Crobot
The Struts
Halestorm
Smashing Pumpkins
Nine Inch Nails

Bad Wolves had just started when we got there and sounded terrible. Apparently some of their equipment was lost. I like them, but I prefer Tommy Vext on vocals. I know he is kinda a shit bag, drama queen, but the dude has pipes. We only heard 2 songs, including Zombie, which was good, but we were so far back it was not that fun.

Did the crowd show respect for KISS? That’s a tough spot for them to follow In this Moment and 5FDP. Not for any other reason than the fan base of those two bands is much different than the fan base that KISS plays to. Also, did people start acting like raging assholes when all the headliners cancelled yesterday or did they understand the situation?

I’m following this on Facebook and people make it sound like a worse time than 9/11. Lol. This happens every single year. May is not a good month in Florida to do this.

In addition to weather, Megadeth got stuck in Canada (COVID restrictions?) and no-showed and Bad Wolves had the aforementioned equipment issues that caused their set to be cut by 20 minutes and I heard the sound guy just cut their sound when they started to go over and they basically got thrown off stage. Then all the headliners got canceled after everyone waited through 2 rain delays, so Day 2 seemed like a complete bust.

I’m heading to the MMR*B*Q in Camden right outside Philly today. Just 1 day, 1-11pm. Disturbed, The Pretty Reckless, Royal Blood, and Living Colour are the top 4 acts. Not a tremendous lineup but for $25 not bad. Of course today will be out first 100 degree day on the east coast and it will be miserable.  At least a couple of the bands on this bill are coming straight from Rockville I believe.

Yes, Kiss was given proper respect. Paul tends to ramble between songs but the crowd ate it up. They sounded great.

I did not see anyone throwing a fit. Honestly, the rain was miserable and cold and after sitting under the stands for hours I was ready to go. Sucks as I was looking forward to seeing Korn, but the lightning was really bad. Right on top of us.

My opinion, they did everything they could to pull it off.

Kiss went on after 5FDP on the stage on the other side of the track. By the time I got over there, Kiss had already played a couple songs. I was probably 200 yards away and could barely see them. They do have 2 big screens on either side that you can watch. The crowd for Kiss was a sea of people. The went on last so no one else was playing.

Forgot….Tonight’s headliner is Guns and Roses. They are scheduled to play 2.5 hours. By far the longest scheduled set.

Rockville has already posted a warning that they are expecting more inclement weather and evacuations today, but right now doors are still opening on schedule. Could be a rough day.

Just got evacuated before even getting in. We snuck in and are currently under the grandstands. It is pouring.

That's a tremendous lineup, and for only $25? This may be the best show you see this year.

3 out of 4 ain’t bad. I really dislike Royal Blood and couldn’t get into them at all.

$25 is for the lawn. You can sit anywhere you want for the first 4 bands, but then you get kicked out to the lawn and assigned seating starts for the 4 main acts. 95 degrees but other than that no complaints. 3rd time I’ve done this festival.

Just saw a guy wearing a “Cane Dewey” shirt. That popped me. We are just outside of Philly.

Got to see Nothing More and a few songs from John 5 before they shut it down. They let us back in, we made our way to GNR, we were able to inch our way up to about 10 feet from the stage and we were set.

About 2 minutes before GNR went on, they pulled the plug.

A few more reviews…

Mammoth WVH is Eddie Van Halen’s kid. We were in the merch line and were listening to them from a distance. I guess technically I didn’t see them, but I am not a fan really.

Small crowd for Black Label Society, but they killed it. Good sound and Zakk fucking shreds. I left a little early because we were trying to get across the festival to get good spots for In This Moment.

I think Crobot is heading your way tomorrow. Go out of your way to see them. They crushed it today at my festival and I saw them twice a number of years ago in the basement room of Webster Hall in front of like 59 people absolutely tearing it up. High energy ‘70s style rock and they are fantastic.

In This Moment

We were able to inch our way forward and ended up about 10-12 rows back for these guys. I dig the music, but they are very theatrical. About 10 less wardrobe changes and they may be able to squeeze 3-4 more songs in.

Burn
The In-Between
Sick Like Me
Blood
Big Bad Wolf
Adrenalize
Whore

They played The In-Between which is my favorite song by them. Good show.

Five Finger Death Punch

We stayed after ITM to get as close as we could for Five Finger. We made it about 3-4 rows back. It was awesome. I have always been a firm believer that one is never too old to rock! But...I may be too old to be that close to the stage. LOL.

This is my 4th time to see Five Finger and it was not the best show. Ivan was definitely feeling the Florida heat and took a laser to the eye, but he finished the set. But being that close was worth it. Awesome time for me and mommacomics.

How was Ministry?  I saw them at Lolapalooza '92 and they blew away everyone else that day, including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and RHCP.  But it might have just been the perfect time and place for them, especially with Psalm 69 having been released that summer.  What kind of interest do they attract these days?

Kiss

Finished Day 1 off with Kiss. By the time we made it across the grounds to their stage they were already a couple songs in. We were also way back (probably 150-200 yards) and could barely see the stage. They had 2 big screens on each side that you could watch. After stading up for 3+ hours, we decided to just to hang back and sit down and enjoy Paul rambling on between songs. LOL.

They sounded great and probably looked good too.

I like In This Moment.  They probably come across better when they can do their full show indoors.  I imagine a short outdoor show in broad daylight is not the best atmosphere to see them.  You heard all their best songs though.

Day 2 started off terrible.

As soon as we got dropped off, they stopped letting people in and it started raining and lightning. They were in the process of evacuating the grounds so there is this huge line of cattle making their way from the grounds to under the grandstands. Several people got mad and moved the barricades to leave. Mommacomics and I take the opportunity to wiggle though the barricades and join the herd, bypassing security. We felt like rebels! LOL

Baroness

After about an hour lightning delay we got in and made our way over to catch Baroness. I was not familiar, but heard good things about them. They were pretty good. Good enough to where I will seek out more of their music.

Ministry

I was a young 20 something back when Ministry was in their heyday and I was a huge fan. Honestly, I had not listened to them since the 90s. We were able to get about 8-10 rows back from them and got ready.

They broke in to the first song and it stated to sprinkle. Each song they ripped into the rain got a little heavier. By the 3-4 song it was insane. Crowd was wild, rain pouring, lightning! It was awesome.

I felt like it was 1992 all over again. First song was a newer one I did not know, but all the rest was old school bangers, and the new song they did play was awesome.

Al is a great showman. He knows how to work a crowd.

Finally the lightning got too bad and they called it in the middle of a song.

Rockville is offering partial refunds for 2 of the 4 days, or a discount to a future festival. This is unprecedented for festivals which specifically cover themselves legally and don’t have to give you anything due to bad weather even if the whole thing is washed out. So I’m pretty shocked by this but maybe this buys back some goodwill.
