The wrestler of the 1970s tournament will run Tuesday to Friday throughout the month of June. Four matches per day. You can define wrestler of the 1970s any way you want. Your favorite. Biggest star. Best in ring performer. That's all up to you the voter. Seedings coming soon.

Well that is interesting. I mean the 80s were ruled by either Hogan or Flair (depending on whom you liked) but the 70s weren't quite so clear-cut.

That's what made the territories so great ;)

Seedings aren't done yet but I have narrowed the field down from 60 wrestlers to 32 wrestlers. The list at the moment is as follows.

Verne Gagne
Nick Bockwinkel
Dick The Bruiser
Harley Race
Dory Funk Jr
Terry Funk
Jack Brisco
Dusty Rhodes
Andre The Giant
Bruno Sammartino
Pedro Morales
Bob Backlund
Mr Wrestling II
Jerry Lawler
Mil Mascaras
Pat Patterson
Paul Jones
The Sheik
Abdullah The Butcher
Dick Murdoch
Blackjack Mulligan
Wahoo McDaniel
Superstar Billy Graham
Ivan Koloff
The Crusher
Billy Robinson
The Spoiler/Super Destroyer Don Jardine
Bill Watts
Ray Stevens
Baron Von Raschke
Ernie Ladd
Moondog Mayne

I'm willing to hear arguments for or against wrestlers being included in the tourney. I might have forgotten somebody deserving.

Jackie Fargo probably needs to be there, although I don't imagine him getting out of the first round.  Still, in Memphis, he WAS wrestling.

He was on my original list of 60 wrestlers. I could add Fargo and get rid of somebody else. I'm thinking The Crusher.

You could replace Lawler with him.  Fargo was bigger in the '70s.

Not sure who's I'd bounce in their favor, but some guys who should be considered in my opinion are:

Brody (started in '71 I think)
Andre
Superstar Billy Graham
Inoki

Andre & Graham are already in.

Brody debuted in 1974. Brody was a big star the second half of the decade as were Lawler, Backlund, Flair and Hansen. Those are the toughest calls to make. That's why I've asked for feedback before making final selections and seedings.

The reverse happens too. Guys that were big stars the first half of the decade. Johnny Valentine. The Crusher. Don Leo Jonathan. John Tolos. etc etc

Inoki is deserving but I'm not including International performers unless they spent a great deal of time in the United States or Canada.

Why not have a "Memphis Elimination Match" (Lawler vs Fargo) with the winner getting in and drawing the bottom seed of whichever bracket you would put them in?

If we ever do a tag team tournament, rest assured Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell will be included.

On Monday June 1st, Lawler & Fargo will meet to determine which one gets in the tournament.

I'll work on the seedings tomorrow.

He never made a name for himself in the magazines, but here are Ken Lucas' accomplishments for the 70s.

Gulf Coast Heavyweight champion - 8 times

Gulf Coast Tag Team champion - 6 times

United States Tag Team champion - 3 times

Alabama State Heavyweight champion - 4 times

Mississippi State Heavyweight champion - 4 times

Multiple runs with minor GC titles such as city championships in Mobile, Pensacola, Panama City and Dothan.

As you can tell he dominated the Gulf Coast territory in the 70s.

Outside of the GC, he held the Mid-America, Southern, Southern Tag Team and Mid-America Tag Team titles in Tennessee. Also had a run as Florida Tag Team champion with Mike Graham in 1976. He and Kevin Sullivan had a run with the Central States Tag Team titles, too IIRC.

I just know him as an early tag partner of Bobby Eaton's.

Better yet, why not expand the field to 64?  Naturally, that would mean four matches a day, but it doesn't seem like it would be too much, and it'd democratically eliminate the on-the-cusp guys.

Or, if 64 seems too much, you could have a field of 48, with 16 "play in" participants.

Eh?  Eh?

Baba in the 70's I'll give you, but Inoki would probably be eliminated in the first round. Inoki has always been bland and blah to me.
