Just read this tonight... Pretty cool they are airing wrestling again. Hope they start with the older wrestling again too.... Georgiann Makropoulos reports that Herb Abrams UWF will start airing on ESPN Classic this Saturday night the 5th from 1-2 am. Some of the stars who could be featured on the shows are Bruno Sammartino, Mick Foley, Bam Bam Bigelow, Lou Albano, Rick Rude, Steve Williams, Bob Backlund, Bob Orton, Don Muraco, Stevie Ray, Louie Spicolli, The Killer Bees and so much more. |

Older is okay, unless its the 50's shit they aired for awhile. Boring, and the same 3 shows in rotation. |

How many UWF shows were produced? Please don't tell me something like 5. If so I'll pass on seeing the same shows aired over and over every month. Last edited on Wed Jan 2nd, 2008 12:49 pm by carpetbeggar |

Longer than that, they ran on and off for about 4 years. They did run a lot of repeats, but there's at least 60-70 different hours of the show. |

I found this In 1990, the company signed a deal with national cable network SportsChannel America. A weekly program called "Fury Hour" debuted in September 1990 and ran until 1993. |

I would say the last year and a half of that were almost exclusively reruns. Then they didn't get renewed, and produced another handful of shows which wound up on ESPN2, which led to the infamous Blackjack Brawl PPV. |

I'd advise doing that, yeah. Contrary to what the smarks will tell you, Herbie's UWF was a lot of fun. His announcing is as bad as everyone says, but the matches arent bad and there were a few guys around there that hadn't been anywhere in a bit that were fun to see. I hope they show where Larry Zbyszko shows up with the AWA belt. That's always fun. |

What were some of the hotter angles they ran, what were the titles(ie. world and tag any secondary ones) and who was booking it all? This is one outfit I know next to nothing about. |

I just watched the two 30 minute episodes recorded early this morning. Quick observations. Herb Abrams should not have been allowed anywhere near a mic.Worse than David Crockett. However he did own the promotion so........ Bruno Sammartino was the play by play man and unlike others,I always liked him. The in ring wrestling was pretty good even if most of these guys were past their prime.Ken Patera,Ivan Koloff,Paul Orndorff,Nikiita Koloff and Colonel Debeers wrestled on these shows. My main issue with these condensed 30 minute episodes is that there are no interviews. These cut episodes literally come from the commercial break and go right to a ring entrance with no interviews so you really cannot get into the action with absolutely no story line.If this continues which I suspect it might,I wont be wasting my time recording them. |

Abrams is so much worse than Crockett. At least Crockett was excited, Abrams just sits there and says "That was something, huh Bruno." Bruno was an OK color man, not good but OK, but there's no way he can carry a broadcast by himself. Other than that it's squash matches featuring '80s WWF guys 5 years after people stopped caring about them. Even the jobbers are past their prime. How bad has your life gotten when you're Ricky Ataki and the WWF doesn't use you anymore so you start jobbing for the UWF? Last edited on Tue Jan 8th, 2008 11:30 pm by srossi |

What do people know about this? From Wikipedia: In 1991, Herb Abrams was owed money by Steve Ray and wrongly suspected that Ray was sleeping with his wife. On May 20, 1991 at a television taping in New York City, Abrams paid Steve Williams an extra $100 for the night to break Ray's nose during their match. The ensuing shoot aired in its entirety on an episode of Fury Hour. |

You guys would bitch if you were hung with a new rope. It wasn't that bad. Crockett took away from a broadcast. Abrams adds nothing. I'd take Abrams style over "Ohhh Ohhhh look at that... Ohh Ohhh a headlock." The half hour show is a bit rushed, but it was still OK. I've only watched the first episode, so I reserve the right to change my opinion after seeing more. |

I just went through my TIVO of the two eps that aired last night. Patera did not look very good, but it was cool to hear Bruno as the announcer (kind of like the WWF days!). I'll Tivo the run and erase until the episodes where Backlund shows up. He did wrestle there for a while, right? |

I remember the Apter magazines building the UWF up... even Eddie Ellner made a comment that the UWF was becoming his favorite federation. I would read about Bruno, the Captain, Dr. Death, Paul Orndorff, some new stud named Stevie Ray, this duo that could be the Road Warriors of the 90's called the Power Twins... I couldn't wait to see it but at the time I didn't have cable. But one day while at my Grandma's I got to watch the episode where Bob Backlund made his return and brawled with Ivan Koloff. After that, I thought within months the UWF would be right behind the WWF and WCW. The next time I saw the UWF was later that year, and I remember some guy I never heard of called Joshua Ben Gurion and another wrestler who carried around a monster stuffed animal. |

Why did Chief Jay Strongbow look so much younger and move so much better in 1990 in the UWF than in 1980 for the WWF? One of life's great mysteries. |

The entrance music is so wildly inappropriate it's hilarious. Paul Orndorff comes out to "Can't Touch This". Billy Jack Haynes has "My Michelle" where the line " So you stay out late at night/And you do your dope for free" is so clearly audible as Bruno tries to put him over as a "real gentleman". It's just ridiculous. Any song that was popular in 1990 was randomly assigned to a wrestler. Last edited on Fri Jan 11th, 2008 11:20 pm by srossi |

The shows they aired either Tues or Wed this week. One hour was from Spartanburg. It featured Concord's favorite Nazi Helmet Hesler vs Nebraska Cornhusker Jeff Husker who were both working SAPW in those days. It also has Valiant as well as Carolinas local Jake Steele vs Ivan Koloff. It is POSITIVELY the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. |

They were marathon affairs which ran 5 to 6 hours each as I recall and covered about a months worth of tv programming. Every so often they'd shuffle the crowd around, which I didn't speculate until later was to present different faces at ringside. Admission was next to nothing and there was full bar service. We saw, just off the top of my head, Billy Jack Haynes, B. Brian Blair, Orndorff, Orton Jr., Dr. Death, Louis Spiccoli, but the most physically imposing guy of the whole bunch was called The Viking, who I didn't until much later come to realize was a young Tony Halme. |

The outdoor show from last night was the worst yet by far, with Albano filling in for Bruno on commentary. He's just horrible. Dusty had the pleasure of jobbing to The Blackhearts in that one, but his 400 pound partner who was trying to keep his jeans up the whole match took the fall. |

Viper II is David Isley, long, long, long time jobber (to his day, in fact). He's best known as one of The Thunderfoots. Jobbed in the WWF a little, but was mainly in Mid-Atlantic and WCW. Nightstalker was indeed Adam Bomb. I've never heard of David Perry before, the guy was horrible so no surprise there. Probably a local rookie who quit right after the UWF went under. |

No idea, but there was another manager on a UWF show, Bobby Rogers, claiming to be Buddy Rogers' grandson. If that's the same Bobby Rogers I'm thinking of, then he's really Mike Rapuano, a Florida indy manager who made the news by trying to sell his kidney on eBay a few years back. This nutjob also called Paul Heyman and said he'd cut one of his fingers off live for a chance to be on an ECW PPV (an offer that I assume was rejected). He also did the Springer circuit as different characters, claiming to be a former WWF Light-Heavyweight champion on one show. Last edited on Sun Jan 13th, 2008 12:39 am by srossi |
